Profile
Tom was called to the Bar in 2018 after successfully completing the BPTC at Cardiff University with a full scholarship from Inner Temple. Tom completed his pupillage with Colleton Chambers in 2019 under the supervision of Emily Pitts. He is now a specialist criminal practitioner working in the courts across the Southwest.
Tom is one of the founding steer group members of Barnone (a group established to improve diversity at the bar on the Western Circuit).
Crime
Tom has built a busy practice both prosecuting and defending. He is a Grade 3 prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service and on the specialist RASSO list.
Tom regularly appears in all levels of court across the Southwest and covers all manner of hearings from first hearing to Crown Court trial. He has also appeared in the Court of Appeal.
Tom is experienced in a variety of criminal offences from theft, fraud and burglary to violence, drugs and sexual assault. Tom has also been instructed in regulatory matters including dangerous dogs, illegal fishing and education prosecutions.
Notable cases:
R v C: Successful prosecution of a man charged with racially aggravated ABH.
R v L: Successfully prosecuted a foreign national charged with possession with intent to supply cocaine in the Southwest.
R v B: Successful prosecution of a man accused of sexually assaulting an elderly woman on two separate occasions.
R v U: Successful prosecution of a woman accused of assaulting her child at the Magistrates’ and at the Crown Court on appeal. This case included hearing the evidence of a seven year old.
R v B: Successfully represented the respondent Crown at the Court of Appeal. In this reported case the court commented on the criteria for creating a criminal behaviour order.
R v M: Defence counsel for a woman facing dangerous dog offences. Successfully obtained a contingent destruction order, effectively sparing the dog’s life.
R v C: Successful defence on appeal of a man charged with controlling and coercive behaviour.
R v E: Defence of a man charged with illegally electro fishing in Cornwall. The client was sentenced to a conditional discharge.
R v R: Successful defence of a man charged with assault by beating and criminal damage in a road rage incident.

Interests
Tom has a particular interest in sports, especially football, rugby and snooker. Tom enjoys going for walks with his dog Blue along the coast. He is also an avid car enthusiast and can often be found at car shows and events around the country.
