Profile
Ramsay Quaife is a respected criminal advocate practising before the courts and tribunals of the South West. He is instructed to defend and prosecute in all areas of criminal and regulatory law. His practice is predominantly in the Crown Court where he deals with the more serious criminal cases.
Defence
Ramsay defends crimes of gravity and complexity at all levels of the court structure and the tribunal system.
He has been led in many cases of murder and manslaughter as well as appearing as a junior alone and is instructed in cases of attempted murder and serious and non-fatal violence.
He has significant experience in cases involving sexual offences, particularly of rape, including relationship or acquaintance rape and stranger rape and in cases where the allegations are of a familial or historic nature and also in cases involving a young or vulnerable complainant.
Ramsay is instructed in complex cases involving allegations of fraud, tax evasion and cases of serious theft, including multi-defendant cases of conspiracy to defraud. He also defends in cases involving allegations of breach of trust and in cases where the complainant is vulnerable. His practice includes advice as to confiscation generally and conducting contested confiscation hearings.
Ramsay is regularly involved in cases involving drugs, the supply of drugs and the production of drugs. He is experienced in cases of drug conspiracy and multi-defendant cases.
He is instructed in cases of death by dangerous or careless driving and in all matters of road traffic law both in the Magistrates Court and on appeal to the Crown Court including cases involving disqualification and special reasons and cases of speeding, excess alcohol and careless driving.
Ramsay has a particular interest in firearms law and advises as to possession, acquisition and usage of shotguns and firearms. He represents gun owners on applications and appeals involving firearms licensing.
Ramsay also defends prosecutions brought by local authorities and other statutory bodies such as the Environment Agency, Health and Safety Executive and Ministry of Defence for offences including:
- Trademark infringement
- Environmental offences
- Trading standards
- Health and safety breaches
- Licensing breaches
- Courts martial
- Tree Protection Orders
He has also represented various parties to Inquests in the Coroner’s Court both with and without juries.
Prosecution
Ramsay Quaife is a Category 3 prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service and on the RASSO panel. He prosecutes on behalf of the Probation Service. He also undertakes prosecutions on behalf of local authorities in matters such as:
- Animal welfare
- Trading standards
- Environmental health
- Trademark infringement
- Licensing breaches
- Tree Protection Orders
Ramsay is instructed by the Crown Prosecution Service and other prosecuting authorities to give pre-charge advice.
He is fully up to date with all rape and sexual offences training provided both by Circuit and the CBA and has completed vulnerable witness training.
Ramsay has prosecuted many cases involving vulnerable witnesses, including the young, the very old, those with learning disabilities and those with physical disabilities. He has prosecuted cases that have involved the use of intermediaries and is familiar with all aspects of special measures and of conducting ground rules hearings.
Ramsay has particular experience of cases involving domestic violence and of controlling and coercive behaviour.
He is also regularly instructed to prosecute serious cases in the Youth Court.
Ramsay has prosecuted cases where the judge’s terminating ruling has been reversed on appeal and in cases where the Court of Appeal have considered the sentence passed by the judge to be unduly lenient.
Appellate
Ramsay has extensive knowledge and experience of conducting cases in the Court of Appeal, Criminal Division, in relation to appeals against conviction and sentence.
He also has experience of appeals and applications before the High Court, including appeal by way of case stated and applications for judicial review.
